Following the series of phenomenal successes recorded by the last two editions of the Glo Lagos International Half Marathon, the Association of International Marathons and Road Races (AIMS) has begun moves to list the race on the World Calendar of marathons and road races.

At a joint press conference held at the Mike Adenuga Towers on Thursday, Globacom and the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) officials said that AIMS, in recognition of the new status of the Glo Lagos International Half Marathon, has sent its representatives to Nigeria.

The representative, Mr. Maurice Winterman, is already in the country working with the Local Organising Committee to fine-tune the technical details of the event in preparation for the listing.  Winterman and Ulf Saletti, the race director of the Stockholm Marathon, who is also the consultant to the Lagos Half Marathon, said that they will make all necessary contributions to ensure that the technical quality of the race is of the highest standard, just as the organizers announced that the next edition of the marathon will be held on December 12.

The organizers also pledged to engage more men and resources to ensure that the race meets all international standards while also showcasing Lagos as a tourist destination.

At the press conference, the telecoms giant announced a special prize for the first five Nigerian male and female finishers in the race. Unlike the last edition where the first male and female went away with Kia Picanto cars, the Nigerian winners will be given N2, 000,000 each. Likewise, the second-place Nigerian (male/female) will receive N1,000,000 while third place Nigerians (male/female) will receive N750, 000 each.

Globacom’s head of sponsorship, Mrs. Modele Sarafa-Yusuf said the giving of cash prizes to the Nigerian winners is to further motivate Nigerians. “It is our hope that Nigerians will win the first level prizes totaling $210,000 but we are also tempering our optimism with reality as we know that road racing is a developing sport in the country but we hope that this will motivate Nigerian runners to take up road racing as a serious sport and we plan to continue working with AFN to develop the sport.”

The cash prize for the overall winners remain same as in previous editions.
The overall winners  of the race (male and female) will receive $50,000 each, the first runners-up in the male and female categories will get $25,000 each while the second runners-up in the male & female categories will cart home $15,000 each. In addition, the third runners-up in the male & female categories will win $10,000 each while the 4th runners-up in the male & female categories will win $5,000 each. Sixth to 10th placed will receive free airtime.
Unveiling the plans for the marathon, which Globacom is sponsoring for the third  time, Mrs. Sarafa-Yusuf who spoke on behalf of the Local Organising Committee, announced that World champion marathoner Haile Gebreselassie is the ambassador for this edition of the race.

In his welcome address, Globacom’s Executive Director, Human Resources, Adewale Sangowawa, said that the theme for the 3rd edition of the Glo-Lagos International Half Marathon is “Run Hard – It’s Your Race”.

“It is a theme that we believe will resonate with the different stakeholders and one, which enjoins every participant to run hard and keep a healthy lifestyle” .

The event will be broadcast live on the Nigerian Television Authority with a delayed broadcast on Supersports.

About 500 organisations and 2000 journalists are expected to participate in the Corporate Fun Run and media Fun Run leg of the event scheduled for December 5, 2009. This edition of the Fun Run will be used as a platform to raise money for the Diabetes Association of Nigeria.
