Glo begins preparation for 3rd Lagos Half Marathon

Preparations for the third edition of the Glo-Lagos International Half Marathon are already in top gear as telecoms giant and title sponsor, Globacom has announced the 12th of December 2009 as the date for the main race.

This will be preceded by the Corporate and Media Fun Run on the 5th of December, 2009.

According to Globacom’s Head of Sponsored Assets, Mrs. Modele Sarafa-Yusuf, the company will host major stakeholders to a huge review and planning session early in October. At the stakeholders’ forum, the previous edition of the event will be evaluated with a view to improving on the execution of this year's marathon. Sub-committees will also be created to handle detailed planning and implementation of the 3rd edition of the Half Marathon. Those expected at the stakeholders’ seminar include property owners, the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), representatives of the mass media, consultants, government officials, marathon experts and volunteers.

Mrs. Sarafa-Yusuf  disclosed that this year’s Half Marathon will be run in support of the Diabetes Association of Nigeria.
“We also want to use this edition of the race to raise awareness about the dangers of diabetes, which is another silent killer. During the last edition of the race we raised funds for the Nigerian Heart Foundation to help reduce the scourge of heart diseases”.

Sarafa-Yusuf also disclosed that Globacom is committed to improving the quality of the race with each edition, adding that efforts will be re-doubled to bring “more comfort to the runners, better exposure to Lagos State and glory to Nigeria”.

She assured that Globacom in conjunction with the AFN will surpass the achievements of the previous events and make this third edition the most exciting ever in the history of half marathons in Nigeria. As is the norm, the forthcoming edition of the Half Marathon will also feature an array of foreign and local elite runners who will compete for various cash prizes. 

The last edition of the Glo-Lagos International Half Marathon was held in February but the event will now revert to its traditional December date.
